February 2016 the government of BC formed FESBC - Forest Enhancement Society of British Columbia, to advance environmental stewardship through achieving carbon benefits and contributing to meeting climate change targets. FESBC has partnered with communities to reduce and mitigate wildfire risks in the community.
To protect the watersheds and to ensure that essential services such as drinking water for the community is not disrupted efforts had to be focused on each of the areas that each have unique requirements.
In 2019 four water purveyors including the District of Lake Country, Regional District North Okanagan, Glenmore-Ellison Improvement District along with Black Mountain Irrigation District received $663,910 in funding to develop a strategy and do one forest fire pilot project in each of the watersheds.
Ongoing planning to protect the watersheds across the Okanagan are vital to protect our communities and vital infrastructure from the potential devastation of wildfire in and around the water infrastructure.
