Okanagan Centre Park is a community-gathering place enjoyed by local residents and visitors year-round. The park’s proximity to Okanagan Lake’s shoreline and trail make it a natural rest stop for recreational users of the area. This is a destination park and its key amenities are a café, museum, open field, children’s play area and public washroom.
About the Project:
The District of Lake Country is kicking off a park improvement project for Okanagan Centre Park. The primary objective of this project is to address following three main functional issues that were identified during the most recent Parks and Recreation Master Planning process.
Washroom Facilities - Issues
The existing facilities in the park are pit toilets.
No running water or sinks to wash hands.
No electricity for lighting.
Pit toilets result in unpleasant odours,
Accessibility & Circulation - Issues
Many of the entrances into the park are not accessible for wheelchair users, strollers, and other forms of mobility.
Within the park, many of the recreation amenities are not accessible and circulation is poor throughout.
Picnic Area - Issues
Many of the picnic amenities are in poor condition, no longer meet the needs of the community and require replacement.
Additionally, a windstorm in early 2021 caused significant damage to shade trees over the picnic area.
Project Timeline & Public Input
A design concept focusing on these three improvements will be presented in summer of 2021. Construction is anticipated to start in spring of 2022 (dependent on Council budget approval).
