District of Lake Country Accessibility Plan

Effective September 1, 2023, municipalities are required to develop an accessibility plan and establish an Accessibility Engagement Group, under the Accessible BC Act.

What is Accessibility?

Accessibility means that all people can take part in their communities through work, play and other daily activities. It is important for municipalities to remove barriers and increasing inclusion and independence for everyone within Lake Country. In a recent survey regarding Parks in Lake Country - 19% of respondents indicated that they or someone in their household have challenges accessing public outdoor places. Now the District needs to better understand how to make access better for those 19%.

All residents are entitled to barrier-free activities, whether they are work, play, or other daily tasks. The District of Lake Country will strive to provide the opportunity to acquire the same information, engage in the same interactions, and enjoy the same services as a person without a disability in an equally effective and equally integrated manner, with substantially equivalent ease of use.

The Accessibility Plan will be informed and developed by those impacted by accessibility barriers to help identify and provide solutions to reduce barriers that are found in our daily lives.

Help Inform the Accessibility Plan:

We need your help to shape the plan for the District of Lake Country. Over the next few months staff will be meeting with the Accessibility committee but will also be reaching out to various stakeholder groups throughout Lake Country.

Take the survey. Tell us what you feel needs to be improved but also what already works well.

Is there a local Lake Country business that already does accessibility well? A business that the District and other local services could learn from? If so - tell us who they are and they will be recognized.
